South Africans are the Donald Trumps of Africa – Richard Poplak, author of Continental Shift
Kevin Bloom and Richard Poplak visited the kykNET studios recently to chat about their new book, Continental Shift: A Journey Into Africa’s Changing Fortunes.
In Continental Shift, Bloom and Poplak document their nine-year roadtrip through Africa, the paradoxical continent they call home.
Achille Mbembe is quoted on the cover saying: “In the aftermath of this book, approaches to China, Africa and international relations will never be the same.”
About 50 years since most African countries gained independence, presenter Waldimar Pelser asks whether on their travels the authors noticed an increase in people interrogating the way they are being governed.
“There’s no consistent stream you could really identify in terms of how governance has changed on this continent,” Poplak says. “But I will say that tolerance for ‘the big man’ is all but done.”
As for South Africa’s reputation in Africa, Poplak says: “As South Africans, we’re viewed with suspicion by the rest of the continent … we’re like the Donald Trumps of Africa.”
