Deon Meyer on writing: ‘75% of your time goes into the first half of the book’

IcarusDeon Meyer chatted to Audible recently about his writing life.

The interview was recorded for a German audience, and Meyer begins by contextualising Afrikaans, the language, he says, “I love in, I live in and that I write in”.

The bestselling author, who has been published in 28 languages around the world, also does an excellent job of recommending South Africa to a foreign audience.

He is asked whether going on book tours interrupts his writing process, and explains that it very much depends on how far along he is with the book.

“75 percent of your time goes into writing the first half of the book, and only 25 percent in the last half, because the first half is really tough,” Meyer explains.

“You’ve got to get into the book, you’ve got to get into the characters. You’ve got to get a feeling for the texture and the sound and the atmosphere of the book. And for me that takes a while.”

Meyer’s latest novel is Icarus, available in Afrikaans as Ikarus.
