“I Don’t Believe in Inspiration – I Believe in Perspiration” – Deon Meyer Chats About His New Book Icarus

IcarusBestselling crime novelist Deon Meyer unveiled his latest Benny Griessel novel, Icarus, on Expresso recently.

Ewan Strydom asks Meyer where he got the inspiration for Icarus.

“I don’t believe in inspiration as much as I believe in perspiration,” Meyer jokes. “A book is like anything else, you’ve got to sit down and you’ve got to work.”

The author adds that he has wanted to write about the wine industry in the Cape for a long time, but could not find the right angle, until he watched a documentary about wine called Red Obsession, which was “one of the germs of the story”.

The other catalyst for the story was an article Meyer read about a French website that provides people with alibis to be unfaithful to their partners. Subsequently, the Ashley Madison online dating scandal happened, and Meyer says he thinks he “got lucky” with that confluence of events.
