“Photography is a Way of Looking in the Mirror” – Roger Ballen

OutlandRoger Ballen, photographer and author of Outland, was recently interviewed by Sean O’Hagan for The Guardian about his new book.

In the interview, Ballen speaks about his photography, what influences him and how the photographs in Outland have evolved from his previous work.

Ballen says he believes in “simple form and complex meaning,” and he aims to create images that have “presence”, and thus stay with you for long after you see them.

Read the interview:

“People constantly compare me to Diane Arbus,” says Roger Ballen, wearily. “But I think Samuel Beckett is the key influence on my work. My photographs evoke the absurdity of the human condition, but they are also records of a personal psychological journey. For me, photography is a way of looking in the mirror.”
