Whisky and Wit like a Whip: An Excerpt from Helen Suzman: Bright Star in a Dark Chamber

Helen SuzmanDuring his time as British Ambassador to South Africa, Robin Renwick became good friends with Helen Suzman, Progressive Party president. His personal connection with the subject of Helen Suzman: Bright Star in a Dark Chamber makes the biography a sparkling read.

In an excerpt from the book shared by Namibiana Buchdepot, Renwick outlines the character of the vivacious, principled and energetic woman who spent her entire political career battling the abhorrent system of apartheid.

Although a woman of principle and purpose, Renwick says she was, incidentally, more fond of whisky than soda.

Read the excerpt:

Helen Suzman also was the most entertaining company it was possible to find in South Africa, or anywhere else for that matter. However difficult the circumstances, lunch with her was sure to end in gales of laughter, and I will never again be able to watch anyone pouring soda into a glass of whisky without hearing Helen say: ‘Don’t drown it!’
