Podcast: Mark Gevisser Discusses the Image that Sparked Lost and Found in Johannesburg

Lost and Found in JohannesburgMark Gevisser recently joined Michele Magwood on her TM LIVE Book Show, which streams online every Friday at 2 PM. In the following podcast of the show, he speaks about how his latest book came from his interest in images, specifically photographs and maps.

Gevisser explains that the image that really sparked Lost and Found in Johannesburg was one he came across while researching his previous book, Thabo Mbeki: The Dream Deferred. He was looking through Drum archives to see what Johannesburg would have been like for Thabo Mbeki when he moved there from the Eastern Cape in the 1960s and he came across a piece by Nat Nakasa titled “Fringe Country”. Accompanying the article was a photograph of a white man and a black woman swimming together in suburban Johannesburg.

“I sort of held that image up against an image I’d found in my family archives of my parents in the water in an embrace and it was out of the comparison I made between those two images that I began a riff, that became an essay, that became a book,” Gevisser says.
