Excerpt: Mark Boucher Describes Teammates’ Reaction to His Career-ending Eye Injury
O, The Oprah Magazine has shared a harrowing excerpt from Mark Boucher’s autobiography, Bouch: Through My Eyes.
In the extract the former Proteas wicketkeeper discusses the eye injury that caused his early retirement during a warm-up match against Somerset in Taunton, England, in 2012. He describes teammates Jacques Kallis reacting stoically and AB de Villiers pulling away in shock.
I felt an immediate and immense pain in my eye. I pulled my gloves off and lay on the ground, covering my face. I’ll never forget turning around to see who was there and trying to gauge how serious it was. I saw Jacques out of the corner of my eye – my good eye. I couldn’t tell how he was reacting. He never gives much away …
I tried to open my other eye and I couldn’t; everything was just black. I stood up and felt a bit wobbly. I looked down at my glove, my white inner glove, expecting to see blood. When it came away without any red I tried to figure out what had happened.
It didn’t make any sense.
