Sue Grant-Marshall Talks to Mandy Retzlaff, Author of One Hundred and Four Horses

One Hundred and Four HorsesMandy Retzlaff, whose book One Hundred and Four Horses documents her escape from Zimbabwe at the height of the farm invasions, talks to Sue Grant-Marshall of Business Day about her incredible story.

Retzlaff and her husband, Pat, currently reside in Mozambique — where they run a horse safari business — but their story, as Grant-Marshall writes, is “so strange, so filled with courage and desperation, that it could be fiction”.

A letter is handed to Mandy Retzlaff. It informs her in broken English that her family must leave their farm. It is no longer their home for it now belongs to the crowd on their doorstep. Then the drums begin to beat.

So begins the author’s remarkable and exquisitely crafted book, One Hundred and Four Horses, a tale of one family’s fight to remain in their beloved Zimbabwe with hundreds of horses entrusted to their care.
