Videos: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Discusses the Different Places She Was in While Writing Her Books

AmericanahCNN’s Zain Verjee interviewed Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie about her new novel, Americanah, in which one of the issues she explores is hair “as a larger point about how we organise society…what it means beyond something that just sits on our head.”

Verjee asked about her development as a writer from her previous two books to this one and Adichie said that the books occupy different parallel spaces rather than there being a linear progression. While writing Americanah, Adichie said she laughed a lot:

Verjee asked Adichie about Chinua Achebe, who passed away earlier this year. Adichie said she has always been in awe of him and describes how her editor sent him her book, Half of a Yellow Sun, without telling her. The editor then called Adichie and asked if she was sitting down before telling her what Achebe had said. Adichie recalls that she just cried when her editor told her Achebe had called her “fearless” for writing about Nigeria’s civil war and had commented that, “she came almost fully made”:
