Podcast: Hlumelo Biko Discusses The Great African Society with Mike Wills
Mike Wills interviewed Hlumelo Biko about his recently published book, The Great African Society: A Plan for a Nation Gone Astray, on 567 Cape Talk.
Wills asked Biko about the timing of the book which was released at the same time that his mother, Mamphela Ramphele, announced her entry into politics with the launch of Agang South Africa. Biko said it was a mixture of pure accident and serendipity, as although he finished the book towards the end of last year, he couldn’t get it published then because of the influx of books about the ANC’s conference in Mangaung, “so they said February and February was a big month I guess”.
When asked if this was a “nuts and bolts” book about business Biko replied that we have a complicated society and you can’t discuss politics without covering economics, so he has tried to answer some of the questions that people are asking by stepping back and looking at history and at the way our society is constructed. He also said that the book offers some practical solutions to problems that South Africa is facing:
