Podcast: David Attwell Discusses JM Coetzee: A Life in Writing
David Attwell, an authority on South African literature and JM Coetzee’s work in particular, was interviewed on ABC Radio National about the newly released biography JM Coetzee: A Life in Writing by JC Kannemeyer.
In the following podcast, he discusses the reasons why the intensely private Coetzee would consent to Kannemeyer writing his biography. Kannemeyer, who passed away shortly after completing the manuscript, was a “respected, diligent, consciousness biographer” and known to be “a stickler for facts”, Attwell points out. This is something that would appeal to Coetzee.
Also, Kannemeyer and Coetzee come from similar backgrounds, which, Attwell suggests, might have made him more suited to the task in Coetzee’s eyes.
