Martin Plaut Examines Factionalism in the ANC After the Murder of Wandile Mkhize

Who Rules South Africa?Martin Plaut, co-author of Who Rules South Africa?: Pulling the strings in the battle for power, has written an article on the factionalism in the ANC following the killing of Wandile Mkhize after the party’s policy conference in June.

Mkhize had led delegates in singing songs in praise of President Jacob Zuma at the conference and was involved in a confrontation with Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe’s supporters. He was shot on his return home.

Plaut examines the reasons for this factionalism in the ANC and the consequences for the party and the South African people in general:

The African National Congress (ANC) has just concluded its policy conference. The policy documents were – as ever – massively detailed and of considerable interest. But few delegates seemed much concerned by them. The real attention was focussed on the ANC’s next conference in December, when the party will elect its new leadership. Since open campaigning is frowned upon inside the party, this was one of the few real opportunities to lobby for support. President Jacob Zuma is facing a challenge from his Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.
