An Australian in the Okavango Experiences Drama in the Delta

okovango

Getaway Guide to BotswanaBotswana’s game-rich Okavango Delta is the world’s largest inland delta, laden with a labyrinth of lagoons and lakes. Trapped in the middle of the sandy Kalahari, it is a paradisaical magnet for Botswana’s wildlife. Australian author Tom Jellet finds himself on a self-made safari, armed with little but his GPS system and confronted by a seemingly insurmountable barrier of water. But help comes in the form of four drunk South Africans in a Landcruiser who are willing to brave the wade-in:

ON a self-drive safari in Botswana, some days start off feeling like freedom but end up smelling of diesel.

Each year, thousands of visitors flock to Moremi Game Reserve – a tongue of dry land jutting into the wet of the Okavango Delta – for the masses of game jammed into this small peninsula. For us, the real adventure begins when we leave the reserve by the north gate.

Instantly, we are bombarded with directions by the helpful park ranger. “Go straight, then left. Stay left near the river crossing until you are on the right side of the river. Go straight for a while. Carry on straight. Then take the second river crossing near the mud patch. From there it’s an easy drive into Khwai Community Camp.”
